A locked Subaru with the keys sitting in plain sight is a humbling moment. It happens in grocery store lots, trailhead pull-offs, downtown garages, and winter driveways when you’re juggling gloves, coffee, and a work bag. Subaru builds dependable cars with security systems that resist casual tampering, which is great until you’re the owner on the wrong side of the glass. If the battery in the Subaru key fob is weak or the fob is lodged in a bag that muffles signal, the car can misinterpret distance and lock. Valet mode on some models changes behavior too, especially around the glove box and trunk release.

Then there are immobilizer problems. If the car sees a key in the ignition or a fob inside but refuses to start, you’re dealing with a different animal. The immobilizer transponder handshake is failing. That’s not a lockout in the pure sense, though it feels like one.
